Relevance and Relationship: While online resources can often give valuable information on the terms found in this book, the book is worth its cost in that it provides students with a consistent, authoritative delivery of terms in this specific field that is of particular interest in the school.

Purpose: This book will serve as an authoritative quick reference for students studying and interested in a specific topic—animals. Students enrolled in biology courses including the school's marine biology class and/or club will also find the plethora of focused definitions helpful to their specific studies. Entries on terms are short (though sometimes long for definitions) but detailed and often point readers towards sources of further information. The writing can be technical.

Validity: Allaby has written many well-respected dictionaries and other works related to the environmental sciences that have been printed by reputable publishers. This book is published by Oxford University Press and has been favorably reviewed in Booklist, Choice, and Library Journal.

Format: This work is in print format, but contains a companion website. Terms found in the dictionary are bolded. Each page contains two columns of terms in an easy to read font size and style.

Arrangement and Presentation: As a dictionary, this text includes zoology related terms with their definitions in alphabetical order. Some basic illustrations are included. The dictionary also contains an appendix that presents the criteria for listing an animal as endangered as well as other related information. Appendices on the universal genetic code, the geologic time scale, and SI units are also found in the back of the book. The special sections all include charts. The book contains a list of websites to consult for further information. Terms with website links are denoted with a symbol within the text.

Diversity: Any student, regardless of ability level, who is interested in animals will find information of interest in this text. However, the technical nature of the writing may make this a more valuable resource for students who are more familiar with the field of study.
